How To Register LCCN In 4 Simple Steps

This article will break down how to register LCCN in 4 simple steps. We take the mystery out of the industry and teach authors how to self publish today!

Step 1 – Have Your Registered ISBNs

Now that you are getting closer to publishing your book and turning on the printing press, you might want to take the quick step and get your Library of Congress Control Number (LCCN) otherwise known as Preassigned Control Number (PCN). Getting your LCCN/PCN is only important if you plan on having your book in libraries or as part of the Library of Congress, which you most likely will. And please know that registering your LCCN is completely free, so don’t be fooled by people trying to sell you one!

The first step in setting up your LCCN is to first have your ISBNs registered. If you have not done so already please stop here and go check out our article How To Register ISBN and Barcode – The 5 Steps To Get Your ISBN and Barcode. Once your ISBNs have successfully registered you can move on to step 2.

Step 2 – Create PrePub Book Link Account

Now that you have your ISBNs successfully registered it is time to go to the Library of Congress website and create your PrePub Book Link Account. After you create your PrePub Book Link Account (which just requires your name and email address), you can request to have your LCCN set up by a librarian.

Step 3 – Send Request For LCCN

Once you create your PrePub Book Link Account you will be brought to a page where you can request your LCCN. Once you click on the button to request your LCCN you will be prompted to fill out a series of questions. You will need much of the same information you used to set up your ISBNs as well as your ISBNs to register you have just registered, this is why you must follow these steps carefully and register your ISBNs first.

Step 4 – Update Your Copyright Page!

After a few days a librarian will email you with your LCCN. You can finally complete your Copyright page in the front matter of your book and add your LCCN. Now you should have a ready to print draft waiting to hit the printer, it is almost time to celebrate!
